Bright Students

High school can be tough. We've all been there and we all realize some of the challenges that come along with education.

Sometimes, it can be difficult for students to balance their home lives, community and social lives and the responsibilities of just going to school never mind worrying about excelling in it.

But we are here to help.

Bright Futures aims to provide students in the Elwick and Watson Street areas with every opportunity you need to succeed in high school while at the same time helping you to explore all your options for now and for the future using the principles of responsibility and respect.

Taking Responsibility and Earning Respect

Being a full-time student is recognized as a type of job with requirements like attending regularly and growing stronger in each class.

The Bright Futures program is not that different and, like school or a part-time job there are both requirements for participation and rewards and supports in place to help you succeed.

To participate in the program, you will need to maintain five key benchmarks. When you enrole in Bright Futures, you commit to:

  • School-work support or tutoring (at least 3 hours/week)
  • Mentorship activities with your SPSW and community mentors (4 hours/month)
  • Maintaining an average of 70% through Grades 11 and 12
  • Maintaining an average of 75% in Grade 11/12 Math and English
  • Community service or volunteer work

Once you commit to these conditions, our staff and volunteers are there to support you every step of the way! In return for your commitment, we will provide you with short-term and long-term incentives.

We will set up and contribute to a long-term incentive scholarship fund of $1000 per year, to be held in trust and used for post-secondary education. In order to receive your maximum $4000 for university, college or technical training, you must earn the required number of course credits per grade level.

Short-term incentives are there to encourage you to explore your interests and develop your talents. These may include transit tickets to get to school and Bright Futures, fees associated with memberships and lessons and other experiences that will help you improve your skills and talents. You will be required to meet with your SPSW and get your parent or guardian's permission as part of the process.
